Ballet Figure

“Ballet Figure,” created in 2020, is an evocative sculpture by George Dumesco, carved from Tasmanian Huon Pine, measuring 1300mm at its longest point. This piece reinterprets the female form, abstracting it into organic shapes with the arms deliberately removed. The remaining form artfully balances on what is left of her left arm, while her left leg is raised vertically in a ballet pose. The sculpture features white ballet slippers and a single sock on her right lower leg, which points downward. The fine grain and warm hues of Huon Pine add to the elegance and abstraction of the piece. This unique artwork captures the grace and poise of ballet, juxtaposed with an intriguing abstraction, inviting viewers to explore themes of movement, balance, and transformation.
